The Word Is Not for Snacking—It’s for Feasting | Growing Through God’s Word

A Dream That Pointed Back to Scripture

In the early hours of May 19, 2026, I dreamed that I was at church on a Sunday morning. After worship, a dear friend whom I have not seen in a while, was sharing an announcement. She was by the stage near our Pastor. She was talking and people were responding, but I couldn’t hear what she was saying. So, I went to the front where she was. For some reason, I had some bread in my hand and I started tearing it into pieces and tossing it on the ground. I immediately came to myself and was embarrassed that I had just tossed bread on the ground. I mean, come on, I made a mess where Pastor was about to walk around while preaching.

It seemed no one noticed and our Pastor’s beloved wife was excited by my actions. Wait! What?? Now people were handing something to my friend. I instantly had one in my hand that I was giving to her as well. I looked at it in shock. It was a four-page, brochure style document like something one might fill out for a financial planning firm. I handed it to her in bewilderment. I did not know what was written on it. I trusted the Lord with it though. As everyone returned to their seats in the sanctuary, my dream slowly faded away.

The Word Is Not for Snacking but for Feasting

As my dream was fading, the Lord said to me that the Word is not for snacking on, it is for feasting on. He went on to tell me that His people are struggling and failing because they lack vision and fail to set goals. I pondered this dream and what He said to me about it all day. Even as I type this blog, He is still revealing things to me. Sometimes I struggle to get in the Word and spend much needed time with my Father. I am sure I am not alone in this struggle. Thankfully, the Holy Spirit nudges me and my Father gently corrects me to get me back on track.

Vision and Goal Setting in the Christian Life

I find it interesting that He specifically called out the goal setting with vision. I am sometimes good with vision, the big picture and finer details. I know people who are very good at setting goals. Some, like my friend from earlier in this story, create vision boards at the beginning of every year complete with goals. I, on the other hand, have rarely been good at setting goals for myself. My least favorite interview question is “where do you see yourself in five years?”. I am like a deer caught in the headlights. His words this morning lit a fire in me though. With His help and direction, I was able to sit down and set three goals and list out the steps to help me achieve them. I did this in under five minutes.

Sharing God’s Word with Confidence

Now, about the bread in my dream. The bread that I was tossing around in the dream was me sharing the Word with others. I did not think anyone heard what I shared. Our Pastor’s wife heard it and was cheering me on. That is why she was so excited. I thought I had missed something and messed up what my friend was sharing. I had released His word and then doubted what I said. I said it under His instruction. He told me what to say. How could I doubt it after I followed His instruction? I know there are others who second guess sharing His word with others. If we are following His leading, speaking what He has told us or encouraging one another with Scripture in love, His Word will do what it is meant to do. Just because we do not see an instant change or result, does not mean He is not working.

Why We Should Feast on God’s Word Every Day

What do I think He meant when He said that the Word is not for snacking on, it is for feasting on? First, it means we should be in the Word every day growing our relationship with our Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Not just one day a week or a few days a week, every single day. How can we know Him if we do not spend time with Him? Second, it means that the Word, our Bible, feeds our hearts and minds. It renews our minds and reminds us that we have hope. There are days we experience things that can leave us feeling down, drained, angry, or just closed off. We need to renew our minds. We need to stir ourselves up with the Word.

Scriptures to Meditate On

I would like to share a few Scriptures to meditate on and hope that they encourage you in your faith.

John 6:32-35 ESV: 32Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” 35Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

Deuteronomy 11:18 AMP: Therefore, you shall impress these words of mine on your heart and on your soul, and tie them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as bands (frontals, frontlets) on your forehead.

Joshua 1:8: Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

Habakkuk 2:2 ESV: And the LORD answered me: “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he who may run who reads it.

Philippians 4:6-7: 6Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Colossians 1:27: To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

A Final Encouragement

If you find yourself in a place of longing for friendship or slipping into a state of apathy or even depression, remember that God loves you. He gave His only Son, Jesus, as a sacrifice for our sins. That sacrifice not only bought our salvation but gave us access to a personal relationship with Him. We are part of His family, sons and daughters of the King of Glory. He declares you are worthy and are loved. Seek Him and you will find Him.
