As I was listening to the Pastors message “On Purpose,” a passage he read really caught my attention!
Matt 6:22 “for where your “treasure” is there your heart will be also.”
This passage got me thinking, “treasure” what is our treasure? It is something we place great worth or consider as valuable.
What could be of great worth or what is valuable in our lives? It could be our time, our money, our job, it could be anything or anyone that has our attention, actions, or energy. So, I read the two scriptures above Matt 6:21 to hear what Jesus said about the treasure:
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on this earth where moth and vermin destroy and where thieves break thru and steal, but store up for yourselves treasure in heaven, where moths and vermin do not break in and steal. Matthew 6:19-20 As verse 21 states “there your heart will be.” Treasure stored in heaven, there your heart will be, “Ok Lord, How and What?!!! As I meditated on those scriptures I realized Jesus wants us to look at our heart. Where our treasure is there is where our heart will be also. It demonstrates how our values will affect our behavior and how we live.
We who value Christ as our treasure above all else will live for Him and seek to bring Him glory.
We will have our minds focused on things above (Colossians 3:2) fixing our eyes on eternity (2 Cor 4:18) and focusing on Jesus (Heb 12:2). Having our hearts set on eternity we will be able to devote ourselves to the Lord with our thoughts, speech, actions, plans, and desires being rooted in Jesus.
The attitude of a servant is what honors God (Matt 23:11, Luke 22:26). If Christ is our focus and our own chosen treasure we will want to glorify him in all we do!
Life will last forever in God’s presence in Heaven. Treasuring life in our hearts will lead us to share the Gospel, praying for the salvation of others, witnessing, and investing in missions at home and abroad to help spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As Matt 28:19-20 states “Therefore Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always even to the end of this age.
Characteristics and behavior shaped by the character of God through the Holy Spirit is an eternal treasure (Gal 5:22-23). Honoring God with our time, money, prayer, worship, and all our other aspects of life, is what honors Him.
Building His Kingdom and increasing our relationship with Him is focusing our hearts on eternal treasure!
