His Word is the Key! Providing Light to Direct Our Path and Connect Us to Jesus
We all long for direction, clarity, and purpose. But how do we find our way when the path ahead seems unclear or roadblocks pop up?
I remember moving to Oklahoma. I was 18 and moving from the small town of Truth or Consequences, NM, to Tulsa—a huge city in my eyes. Mind you, this was before we had GPS technology to guide us. After a long and ‘adventurous’ trek across the country, I was hot, tired, and beginning to feel alone and afraid. I couldn’t find my destination. I remember telling the Lord that if it wasn’t so far to go back home, I would turn around. Then He reminded me of a song we had been singing in church. It was a children’s song, but it was more than a song—it was His Word: “The joy of the Lord is my strength.” I began to sing and lift my eyes to Him. Joy and strength arose within me, and His light directed my path. Then, I sang the last verse, “The devil is defeated, and I laugh—ha ha.” At that moment, I somehow (through God’s divine appointment) pulled into an apartment complex parking lot just as another car arrived. While I wouldn’t normally do this, I rolled down my window and asked the lady, “You wouldn’t by chance be Susan O.?” Are you ready for this? She said, “Why yes, I am! You must be Collette.” She and her family were to be my hosts as I got situated in Oklahoma. When I was confused and feeling alone, it was His Word that gave me guidance.
Just as I needed direction then, we all need direction in life. And the good news? God has already provided the light we need through His Word.
Staying in His Word: The Key to Allowing God to Light Up Our Path
Psalm 119:105 tells us, “Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” Imagine walking on a dark road without a flashlight—you’d stumble and struggle to see what’s ahead. You might have a small, dim light, like a devotional that includes some Scripture, but it’s not the same as fully immersing yourself in God’s Word. While that small light is helpful, it doesn’t illuminate everything you need to see.
There is a better choice—we can truly embrace God’s Word. When we immerse ourselves in Scripture, day and night, His light shines brighter, guiding each step with clarity and confidence.
Jesus said in John 8:31-32, “If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” The word continue means to abide, remain, dwell—to stay. This means we can’t just glance at Scripture occasionally; we must live in it daily.
When we commit to reading, meditating on, and applying His Word, it transforms us. The Holy Spirit breathes life into the Words, making them more than just text on a page. Before opening your Bible, ask the Holy Spirit to shine His light on what He wants you to learn. Without Him, the words remain just words and seem foolish and confusing.
1 Corinthians 2:14 puts it this way: “But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them, and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.” But with the Holy Spirit, those words become power, wisdom, and light. John 16:13 says, “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth.”
The Choice Is Ours:
- Walk blindly, making decisions based on emotions and circumstances.
- Settle for just a little light—maybe a quick devotional here and there.
- Or fully embrace God’s Word and walk in the fullness of His light—allowing His Word and the Holy Spirit to illuminate our path.
Which one will you choose?
Hunger for a Deeper, More Intimate Relationship with Him—Move Beyond Head Knowledge
More than just reading about God, we are called to truly know Him. Jeremiah 9:23-24 reminds us: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom… but let him who boasts boast in this: that he understands and knows Me.”
Think about your relationships. Some people know you on the surface—they know your name, what you do for a living, etc. Then there are those who truly know your heart. How do they know you so much better? Because you’ve invested time with them. You’ve developed your relationship with them. The same is true with God. To deepen our relationship with Him, we must spend time with Him.
Paul’s words in Philippians 3:10-11 (AMPC) have become the cry of my heart: “For my determined purpose is that I may know Him [that I may progressively become more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him]…”
Do you have that hunger? If not, ask Him for it. The more we spend time in His presence—through Scripture, prayer, and listening—the more that hunger grows. I had a pastor who taught me: It starts with desire, moves to discipline, and then we experience the delight.
Are You Ready to Have a More Intimate Relationship with Him?
- Make your relationship with God your highest priority!
- Begin every day with Him. (Greet Him before you get out of bed or kneel in surrender.)
- Set aside intentional time for prayer and the Word.
- Pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17)—keep the conversation with God ongoing.
- Listen to Him—journal what He speaks to your heart.
- Invite Him into every part of your day.
- Read small Scripture passages throughout the day—at breaks or meals.
- Surround yourself with Scripture—artwork, decorations, or index cards with verses.
- Talk about His Word in everyday conversations.
- Meditate on and memorize His Word (use an app, a screensaver, or index cards to keep it before you).
We don’t just want to know about God—we want to truly know Him.
Trusting God When It Doesn’t Go as Planned
Earlier, we read the first part of Philippians 3:10. Now, let’s read the rest: “All I want is to know Christ and the power that raised Him from death. I want to share in His sufferings and be like Him even in His death.”
Paul wrote Philippians 3 while in chains. He had lost everything, yet he considered it nothing compared to knowing Christ. He was suffering, yet he still rejoiced. His eyes were fixed on Jesus, not his circumstances.
As Jesus prepared to go to the cross for you and me, He was sweating drops of blood. He prayed, asking God the Father if there was any other way. He was in a really stressful and hard place. Yet, He said, “Not my will, but Your will be done.”
Life doesn’t always follow our script. But Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.”
A Call to Deeper Commitment
So, where do we go from here? Let’s take a step forward:
- If you’re feeling lost, commit to making His Word your daily guide.
- If you long to know Him more, be intentional about your relationship with Christ.
- If you’re struggling to trust Him, surrender and stand on His promises.
We never arrive; we keep growing. Let’s be intentional in walking in His light, living in His power, and knowing Him more deeply every day.
Which step will you take today?
